BBC Proms - Classical

The schedule for The Proms 2013 has been announced.

Now in its 119th season, The Proms will open at Royal Albert Hall on July 12, 2013 and will feature 92 concerts over two months before culminating in four simultaneous ‘Last Night of The Proms’ celebrations around the UK.

Jazz features prominently in The Proms lineup this year, with British pianist Django Bates taking on many of Bird’s classics in Prom 62: ‘A Celebration of Charlie Parker.’

Gospel also steps out into the limelight, with the first ever Prom dedicated to gospel music (Prom 7), and critically acclaimed a capella group Natually 7 performing their own concert for Prom 22.

The Urban Classic Prom (Prom 37) also adds to the diversity of this year’s lineup, with Maverick Sabre, Laura Mvula, and rapper Fazer taking the stage with the BBC Symphony Orchestra as they, conducted by Jules Buckley, put the best of British R&B, Soul, and Rap into an orchestral context.

Not forgetting that this is a classical music affair, The Proms will play host to many of the greatest classical musicians, composers, and conductors this world has to offer this summer.

Of special note stands Argentine-born conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim, who will conduct the first ever complete Richard Wagner‘s Ring Cycle in one proms season this year. Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, this will be Barenboim’s first Wagner opera led in the UK, accompanied by German orchestra Staatskapelle Berlin.

2013 also marks the 50th anniversary of BBC’s iconic Doctor Who television series; which will be honored by the proms with a special feature this year. Marin Alsop will also set a major milestone for the proms by becoming the first woman to conduct the ‘Last Night of The Proms.’
