Art Pepper’s ‘Neon Art’ Album Details Revealed

By , Editor | The Jazz Line

New details have been revealed about Art Pepper‘s upcoming release, ‘Neon Art: Volume One’.

The album is due for release August 28, and will feature a collection of previously unheard tracks from Pepper himself. It will also be available exclusively on vinyl, with a download card included in the package for your digital listening pleasure.

The album will be released on Widow’s Taste Records, which was launched by Art’s third wife Laurie Pepper to allow Art Pepper fans access to his vast archive of recordings left unreleased after his untimely death in 1982.

Art Pepper was one of the first Jazz saxophonists to experiment with a string section on an entire album. His 1980 album ‘Winter Moon’ album went on to serve as a model of how Saxophone and Strings can be mixed without one constraining the other. Many ‘Jazz purists’ hated the album, although Laurie Pepper stands in defense of her husbands musical exploration, saying, “Art hated the idea that people put jazz in a pigeonhole. He wanted to make people forget the categories and ‘make them open up and listen.'”

‘Neon Art: Volume One’ stands as the first of a three volume series, all containing previously unreleased recordings by Art Pepper himself.
